Why Sunscreen is a must have for Your Hands?
Why sunscreen is a must have for your hands?
How much do you really know about sunscreen?
Most of us slather it on without a second thought, knowing it protects our skin from harmful UV rays. But what goes on behind the scenes in creating a top-notch sunscreen?
Get ready for the summer adventures with our very own SunCare and it's creator, Head of the Kinetics Science Foundation, Dr. Zane Grigale-Soročina.
How sunscreen works?
To explain our starting point - there are two types of sunscreen available on the market: chemical filters that are mostly oil based that convert the sun's energy into heat; and physical filters, based on white pigments which reflect the light. While there are different grades and qualities available, these filters can be challenging to apply due to the thickness and also the white color layer it applies to the skin which is not what we want to look like on the beach or other outings. Also, applying thick layers of cream, especially on children, can be difficult and time-consuming.
That's where Chemical filters come into play and are often used in products for this exact reason, as they are easier to apply. They absorb UV rays and convert them into heat energy. Heat is so little you can't feel it. While effective, they can feel very greasy on the skin due to their oil-based composition. By the way - if you want to know more about this, read our article explaining the most asked questions about sunscreen here!
Why we created Sun Care?
While working on our formula, it was crucial for us to be able to ensure broad-spectrum protection, providing a shield against both UVA and UVB rays. Here's why that's important:
- UVB damages the outermost layers of your skin, overexposure is visibly seen as sunburn or later - a tan. With a good protective filter, this reaction occurs minimally. If the SunCare is regularly reapplied, it can significantly reduce the possibility of tanning.
- UVA damages collagen and elastin cells in skin, leading to premature aging. 1
Also, we wanted to ensure that after application, there would be no desire to wipe off excess product, as light texture for smooth feel is a hallmark of all Kinetics cosmetics products. That required us to work on a balance between the chemical and physical filters, between oily and hard to apply textures.
How we developed it?
Creating a formula that effectively protects and is suitable for sensitive skin without leaving a greasy or sticky residue was a significant challenge. Finding the right balance between effectiveness2 and the fast application took almost two years, till we successfully developed a unique formula.
Zane tells us more about the process behind the scenes: “In collaboration with Guntra, a chemist in our color team who also has a background in farmacy, we conducted extensive research on the existing sunscreen filters. We investigated their potential risks and their effects on both the skin and overall health.”
"We identified the most skin-friendly and effective filters that work well together. It was crucial to determine how certain filters interact with each other, either neutralizing or reinforcing the effects," she adds.
There were also some interesting discoveries. For example, based on the findings, frequently used filters that posed potential risks, like octocrylene, oxybenzone, and homosalate 3 were excluded from our sunscreen.
Why you should use it?
Up to 90 percent of the visible skin changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun. 4 Even though the effects of UVB rays fade quickly in the form of tan, UVA rays can cause damage that lasts a long time, causing premature aging and in worst cases - skin cancer! That's why sunscreen is so important—it helps protect your skin from both short-term and long-term harm.
Once the damage is done, there's no way to reverse it, so it's crucial to take care of your skin by using sunscreen that offers full protection regularly.
While we recommend using SunCare by dispensing a dose the size of your thumbnail for one hand, remember that the key to optimal protection is regular reapplication. We suggest renewing the layer optimally every 2 hours, 5 especially when exposed to the sun and sweating, even more frequently when swimming.
From salon into the sunlight
Suncare isn't just reserved for beach outings or outdoor adventures. It should be an essential part of your daily routine, offering daily protection. For example, after a manicure in the summer months, swap out your lotion for Suncare. Just as you apply sunscreen to your face before stepping outside, extend the same level of care to your hands and forearms. Apply the suncare product generously and gently massage it into your skin, ensuring thorough coverage.
By incorporating SunCare into your skincare regimen, you're not only safeguarding your hands from premature aging and sun damage but also embracing a proactive approach to skincare. So, the next time you step out into the sunlight, remember to show your hands the love and care they deserve. After all, they're the unsung heroes of your skincare journey!
